PhD Studentship

We are delighted to be teaming up with North West Cancer Research to fund a 3 year PhD studentship for blood cancer research within the academic department of haemato-oncology at the University of Liverpool.

The project is focussed on Chronic Lymphocytic Leukaemia (CLL) and diffuse large B cell lymphoma (DLBCL), which make up more than half of all the newly diagnosed cases of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL). Some cases of CLL and DLBCL have a deletion in one of the chromosomes, which means these cells lose about 394 genes. Patients who have this deletion have a higher risk disease as not only is their disease more aggressive, but it can also become more resistant to therapy. Unfortunately, we know very little about how these genes work together, as there are no models we can use to study how their loss affects the way that the cells work. In this project, we will use a technique called CRISPR/Cas9 (known as molecular scissors) to remove these genes from cells that have been developed from patients with CLL and DLBCL. This will allow us to study them in the laboratory to see how the cells develop resistance to therapy, and potentially uncover new ways to treat these diseases by understanding how the genes work together.

This studentship is focussed on addressing which patients are more likely to respond to a novel and expensive treatment right at the outset to ensure that this treatment is used when it is most likely to be effective. This is of benefit both for patients (ensuring that they get the best treatments) and the NHS to best direct stretched financial resources.

We are delighted to be involved with this project.

David Jones' book

Helping to raise funds for Bloom

The fantastic Dave Jones, co-owner of The Cavern, has released a book, with a percentage of the proceeds coming to Bloom!
The title is "Liverpool Music Roots, The Memorabilia Collection of Bob Wooler". The book is all about the man who became The Cavern Club DJ in the late 1950s and 60s, and includes lots of memorabilia from the exciting music scene of the time - the groups who played and the lineups. The book cost is £29.99 plus postage where applicable.
Dave Jones has generously agreed to donate his fee for each book sold through us (a percentage of the cost). Please contact fundraising@thebloomappeal.org.uk to order your book.

Santa Fun

Merry Christmas

We want to say a big thank you to Richie, Craig and the team for their fabulous Santa sledge around South Liverpool on the 21st December.

The team helped Santa make an early appearance by building him a sleigh 🎅🏽

The Children absolutely loved it and his visit helped get them even more excited for the big night.

And we are excited to let everyone know that the team managed to raise over £700 for The Bloom Appeal for which we are truly grateful.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from everyone at The Bloom Appeal 🎄🎅🏽 🎁

Frank Donovan

Birthday Celebrations

Huge thanks to one of our Founding Trustee's, Frank Donovan. Frank raised over £3,000 for Bloom through his 80th Birthday Appeal!

Frank has been involved in fundraising for blood cancer for decades and we are delighted that he has raised so much for Bloom. We are extremely lucky to have him as a trustee.
Thank you for all your hard work Frank!
